India is number 11 of the countries with the strongest persecution of Christians worldwide. Religious freedom is interpreted differently from state to state. The anti-conversion law in some states provides for a prison sentence of up to ten years for any attempt to turn a person away from Hinduism. State sanctions and abuses by one's family, the village community, the police, and radical groups range from threats, violence, torture and deprivation of liberty to rape, expulsion and murder.

In addition, there is extreme poverty in many regions of the country. Some 33 % of children under the age of five are malnourished. People from the lower castes often have little chance of an education and do not even seek one because they believe the lie that they are not capable of it. Change takes place very slowly as a result.
